The conservation of natural habitats and the protection of endangered species is the Department of Natural Resources main mission. The Bosque Estatal de Guilarte, extending along the southern section of the island’s Cordillera Central, is a prime example of that goal bearing fruit.

The Visitor’s Center, where helpful employees will point you in the right direction, is located in the town of Adjuntas and should be your first destination before setting out. The park offers a variety of activities nature lovers will enjoy such as hiking, bird watching and appreciation of native flora and fauna. A trail leading to Punta Guilarte, one of Puerto Rico’s highest peaks, is the best way to experience the complete richness of the land. Other trails highlight the grandeur of tall Eucalyptus and endemic Capa Prieto trees where patient explorers con spot assorted species of birds that populate the area. Scenic lookouts spread throughout the forest give visitors a chance to look down at the southern coast of the island.

The park also features recreational areas with gazebos and other amenities. Several cabins are available for overnight stays, an ideal way appreciate nature in its purest form.
