Description: One of the most beautiful beaches in the world is located in the island-municipality of Culebra, about nine miles east off the coast of Fajardo. The idyllic Flamenco Beach is trully a wondrous site to behold. It’s horse-shoe shape composed of silky smooth, powdery white sand envelops perfectly azure water and is framed by pristine green hills. Once you dive in, the water is impossibly clean and crystal clear because of the lack of rivers flowing into the sea. Snorkeling is a favorite activity because of the abundant coral reefs and slew of marine animals including large schools of fish. A popular landmark is a World War II-era tank that lies just short of the shore, a relic of the time the U.S. Navy controlled the area. The surrounding area across much of the island’s coast is a nature preserve that protects nesting sites for giant sea turtles and large colonies of tropical birds. The information center located at the entrance provides orientation about the camping grounds and their use, a very popular way to spend the night on the island. Shuttles are plentiful to and from the town of Dewey during the day.
