1989 Description: Puerto Rico’s mountain municipality of Jayuya – named after the cacique, or chief, that governed the area in Pre-Columbian times – is a town known for its deep admiration of Taíno heritage. No two attractions highlight this inclination better than the Museo del Cemí and La Piedra Escrita. The museum is an one-of-a-kind structure built to resemble a cemí, the physical representation of Taíno deities. Archeological artifacts are displayed inside and allow guests to learn about Puerto Rico’s indigenous inhabitants and their way of life. For an experience closer to nature, La Piedra Escrita offers visitors the chance to observe first-hand some examples of authentic taíno petroglyphs. Carved onto a huge stone lying in the middle of Río Saliente, these line drawings represent animals and other natural phenomena closely related to the taínos’ daily life. Either bathing in the natural pool formed by the stone’s obstruction of the river or walking along the boardwalk trail, the amenable surroundings lend themselves to a peaceful day out. |
